THE DYNASTY OF THE MORTET CHISELLERS BEGAN IN ROME IN 1890. THE PROTOTYPE WAS AURELIO MORTET (1845-1926), OR RATHER "SOR AURELIO" AS HIS FRIENDS LOVE TO CALL HIM. BORN OF A FRENCH FATHER, HE LIVED IN VIA SERRAGLI, IN THE SAN FREDIANO QUARTER OF FLORENCE WHERE SINCE HE WAS A BOY HE FELL IN LOVE WITH THE ART OF ENGRAVING, ATTENDING A WORKSHOP IN THE VICINITY OF HIS HOUSE, WHERE HE DID HIS APPRENTICESHIP. AFTER, HE OPENED ONE OF HIS OWN IN FULL RENAISSANCE CHARACTER, WHERE HE EMPLOYED CARVERS FOR WOODWORK, AND ENGRAVERS FOR METALWORK. HE MOVED THEN TO ROME IN 1890 FOR PROFESSIONAL REASONS RELATING TO WORK ON THE LARGE BUILDINGS THAT THE NEW CAPITAL REQUIRED, AND ALSO TO MAKE A CONTRIBUTION TO THE SCHEDULED EXPO IN 1911. THEN HE ESTABLISHED HIS WORKSHOP AND LODGED IN THE HILLS DISTRICT. HIS FIVE CHILDREN WERE ALL MALES HEADING FOR ARTISTIC CRAFTS. ALFREDO (1874-1948), ALBERTO (1879-1959) AND MARIO (1892-1947) BECAME SPECIALISTS IN THE ART OF CARVING. ARMANDO (1884-1969) AND DANTE (1889-1995) BECAME SPECIALIZED INSTEAD IN THE ART OF CHISELLING IN THE CALVI WORKSHOP, A KNOWN SCULPTOR OF THE TIME. ARMANDO CONTINUED WITH CALVI, AND DANTE FOLLOWED THE SPACCARELLI WORKROOM, ANOTHER KNOWN CHISELLER OF THE TIME. BEYOND THE WORKSHOP, THE TWO BROTHERS ALSO ATTENDED THE INSTITUTE OF DECORATIVE ARTS IN SAN GIACOMO. WHILE THE ENGRAVING HIT HARD TIMES DURING THE WORLD WAR, THE CHISELLERS EVOLVED. YES THEY PRODUCED WORKS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE, LIKE FOR KING VITTORIO EMANUELE III AND QUEEN MARGHERITA. THE GREAT DEPRESSION OF 1929 CREATED PROBLEMS FOR DANTE WITH THE WORKSHOP CLOSING IN 1933. MEANWHILE THE TRADITION CONTINUED WITH VIRGIL (1926), SON OF DANTE, ALTHOUGH HE WAS AN EXPERT IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION HE LEFT IN 1947 AND DID AN APPRENTICESHIP WITH HIS FATHER AND UNCLE ARMANDO (1884-1968). AT THE END OF THE ‘60S, ARMANDO (1955), SON OF VIRGIL TOOK OVER THE WORKSHOP.
IN THE LATE 70S HE CONTINUED HIS WORK IN THE ORIOLO STUDIO IN ROME AND ARMANDO, HIS SON CONTINUED INTO THE 90S. THEY WORKED AND TAUGHT THE CHISEL IN EVERY PART OF THE WORLD. IN 2011 THE WORKSHOP WAS AWARDED THE CRAFT WORKSHOP OF EXCELLENCE BY THE LAZIO REGION.
